From the 17th century onwards, Nagasaki engaged in vigorous trade with foreign countries. As a result the city was influenced by Portugal and Holland in particular, and developed a unique culture and heritage. There are still many old Western buildings here and they are now popular tourist attractions.
Unzen
Hot spring with the smell of sulphur
This hot-spring town in a national park at an altitude of 700m has been appreciated as a summer resort by foreigners since the early 20th century. Unzen Hell is a must-see.

Hirado is a castle town and was the location of Japan’s first trading post with Europeans. It is a unique historic town with plenty of reminders of early contact with the West. There are also shops selling Asian confections.
Sasebo – Kuju Kushima
Relax by magnificient ocean and island view
Kuju Kushima consists of 208 large and small islands with multiple places of interest. Sasebo is a naval town; you have to try the famous Sasebo hamburger here.
Shimabara
The water capital with the symbolic castle
Castle town surrounded by natural beauty. There are a number of hot springs here, and coffee shops that use the natural spring water. The speciality is guzouni.
